What Are Open Adoptions?

Open adoption is a form of adoption in which birth parents maintain contact with their child and the adoptive family. This is an agreement made between the birthparents and the adoptive family and includes any form of communication or exchange of information.

Are you able to maintain a relationship with your child and their adoptive family after an adoption plan is complete?

Not only could you choose to maintain a relationship with your child after the adoption is complete, but you can also personally choose the right family to raise your baby. Openness depends on several factors, including which state you are in. In the state of Ohio, any form of ongoing communication following the adoption is considered an open adoption.  However, in Ohio, open adoptions are not enforceable. The level of ongoing contact is agreed upon by both birthparents and adoptive parents, and is a moral agreement.

Depending on your agreement with the adoptive family, communication can include visits, phone calls, letter exchanges, email exchanges, picture sharing, and more. This means that parents can still maintain communication even after the adoption has taken place.  Open adoption with at least some form of contact is beneficial to all members of the adoption triad.  It helps birth parents have a sense of peace about their decision, it gives adoptees important information about who they are, and helps adoptive parents throughout the life of the child.

Beneficial as it is, open adoptions do have some difficulties that should be taken into account. Setting healthy boundaries and clear expectations are key to building a strong relationship.

When it comes to making an adoption plan, you are in complete control. Open adoptions are voluntary and require both parties to agree, so choosing the right family to parent your child is an important part of the process. CFK works with you to ensure that before you commit to an adoptive family, that you both have the same hopes and expectations for the future.

The reality is that Open Adoption can be a beautiful option for all those involved.
